UTS Speed Test
Before performing your test please take a minute to read the frequently
asked questions below. After reading the questions, click on "Start the
test" to go to the test page.
Frequently Asked Questions about the
UTS Speed Test
- What does the speed test
measure? The speed at which information is
sent from a server to your computer. The quicker the download
speed the faster you can download information from the Internet
to your computer.
Upload
Speed
Upload Speed is the reverse of the above. It
determines the speed at which you can send information from your
computer to a server. The quicker the upload speed the faster
your information is sent out.
Ping
(Latency)
Ping Time is in milliseconds and measures the
time it takes for information to be sent from your computer to a
server and then back again. The lower the ping time the better
because it means info flows rapidly between your computer and the
server.
- What constitutes a good
result? A good result is a value greater
than 90% - 95% of your stated plan value. Many customers receive
98% or better. If you feel you are not receiving the speed you
expect, please see if any of the other FAQ's apply. If you have
removed any routers, checked your anti-virus program, and ensure
you are not running any other applications, please power cycle
your modem, restart your computer, and run the speed test again.
If you are experiencing speed issues, please call the helpdesk at
9221.
- What can affect my speed test
results? There are a number of things that
can impact the accuracy of your speed test results. UTS
recommends performing your speed test connected directly to the
modem via a cable. Remove any routers, switches or hubs.
Routers (wired or Wi-Fi)
Temporarily
bypass routers and directly connect to modem to eliminate the
router as a potential bottleneck during the test. Once your
testing is completed simply put all your connections back like
they were and reboot your computer.
Cables
Kinks, bends, cuts in cables
can impact the ability to transmit/receive data. If you
have another cable with similar specs, try swapping it out and
run your tests again.
Virus scanners
Temporarily disable your
live virus scanning if necessary. Make sure you don't leave it
disabled.
Malware
It is possible that
malware/viruses are running in the background and consuming the
same network bandwidth you are trying to measure with the speed
test.
Other CPU/Memory intensive applications running
on your PC during the test
If you are downloading
music/movies/data during the test your results will be
skewed. Stop all network intensive applications (that you
are aware of) and rerun the test. Similarly games running
on your computer during the speed test will be competing for the
same resources necessary to provide you accurate results.
Shut down any running games before testing.
- Why are my test results
outrageously fast? This is usually the result of
something installed on your computer that is intercepting traffic
between your web browser and the server. Examples of this would
be security software from McAfee or Symantec. Try momentarily
disabling the software to see if it is the source of the problem.
Make sure you don't leave it disabled.
- Why do I get a different
result when I use international speed tests? The
speed test server of UTS is located on Curacao, close to the UTS
subscribers. It is therefore the most accurate indication of the
client’s internet connection performance. International speed
test servers are located on other providers’ networks. They
occasionally suffer from congestion, and may be limited to a
maximum speed when providing service to customers not on the
provider’s network.
